How do I force Google to give me the US Version?

April 24th, 2015 by steve

As a US resident traveling abroad, I’ve noted that Google assumes I want to see their page and search results in the language that correspond with the country I’m visiting. But what if I don’t? It’s not enough to just remove the country code from the end of the URL. Google will replace it.

To get Google to ignore my country location, I used Google’s No Country Redirect, http://www.google.com/ncr, in my browser’s address bar. Once loaded in your browser, that page creates a cookie in that deactivates redirection from Google.com to any local Google domain.

To restore redirection, you must clear your browser’s cookies.  Be aware — this will cause you to lose all your cookies, perhaps forcing you to re-login to other sites.

SOLVED: How to Fix 500 Internal Server on WordPress

March 15th, 2015 by steve shields

WordPress users are too familiar with this message.

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, …..  and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Apache/2.0.52 (Red Hat) Server at www.shieldsgroup.com Port 80

The reason I get this error is because WordPress randomly writes an .htaccess file into a directory in which it does not work — the / directory.

If that is your problem and you delete it from that folder, using your FTP client, your WordPress blog will work.

SOLVED: How do I merge two Facebook pages that I manage?

December 25th, 2014 by steve shields

Because Facebook changes layout and methods of doing things, searching for how to merge different Facebook pages that you manage can be frustrating. The way it was done last year is not the way it’s done this year.

If you are the admin, the easiest way to merge multiple Facebook pages is to go to www.facebook.com/pages/merge and select the page you wish to keep from the top dropdown list and the one you want to eliminate in the second dropdown list.

Be careful, this cannot be undone.

This worked in December 2014. I am guessing it will work in 2015
