So – a friend sent you a message that says, “You’ve been hacked!”<\/strong> because they received a friend request from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You probably haven’t been hacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what\u2019s probably happening\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bad actor sets up a Facebook account in your name and steals your profile picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he looks at your existing friends and makes friend requests of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You haven’t been hacked. You are simply being impersonated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your friends have hundreds (maybe thousands) of Facebook friends so unless you’re close, they don\u2019t remember whether they are Facebook friends with you or not, so they accept the request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then your impersonator sends them a message: \u201cHey \u2013 I am stranded in Bombay with no money. Can you wire me some?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you probably don’t need to change your password.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
