I'm able to access some of the data. When I first had the problem, I borrowed the adapter to pull off some family pictures (from 2004-present). When I did that, it appeared the disk was OK. When I tried to navigate the drive today, it was clear that parts of the drive are gone. I really didn't have much else on the drive. I've moved most of my media to the slave drive. The itunes music was on the bad drive, but I have all of that on my laptop.

Thanks for your help. See you next week.
-Doug

Doug -- thanks for the followup.

Are you able to access the data on that drive, or did you lose it all?

Regarding malware, I've successfully used http://www.malwarebytes.org for malware removal.

Cheers!

We have a diagnosis. I had used a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to check the two drives, and was able to access my files. It appears that the Hard Drive is malfunctioning. My tech friend, VLD, came over last night and we were able to boot to a special boot CD that runs a basic Win XP OS. We were not able to see the partition on my primary drive with the operating system. We pulled the drive and were able to successfully boot the system with the Windows 7 disk. I'll be returning the new video card for a new hard drive, and possibly a battery backup.

I think there were a number of variables (windows update, power outage, possible malware) that made this issue a bit more puzzling than it was in the end.

Thanks for your ideas and suggestions!

One of my tech friends is suggesting that I check the power supply. Hoping that might be it so that I don't have to do anything with my bios.

I wonder if the power outage did something funky to his bios?

I'd burn a linux iso that runs live and try booting from that. If that doesn't work, it's probably a bios problem.

If it is the bios, maybe he could flash it....

A buddy of mine, Doug, sent me this message...

I'm having a major problem with our family pc. Up until recently the system was used primarily by my kids. For the past few months we have used it as our home DVR using free over the air digital signals, a dual tuner, and an Xbox360 in the living room as a media center extender. On Tuesday night, at about 8:05, I turned on the extender to discover that it wasn't able to connect. I found the computer in a frozen state. (I immediately panicked when I realized that I had less than an hour to correct or LOST would not be recorded!!!) I pulled up the task manager & was able to close media center on the pc. The system was acting glitchy. It started acting more normal when I got a message that a System update had finished, one of which had failed. About the time it seemed to be correcting, our power went out for 30 seconds. Since then I have not been able to startup correctly. Whether I startup normally, in safe mode, or any other option, the system continues to attempt to reboot but fails & restarts. I've attempted startup from the Window 7 disk in the DVD. It processes through two load up screens, continues loading with the Win 7 logo, then ends at a black screen.

So far I've done the following:
1. I checked both hard drives (500gb primary and 1TB slave) with a SATA/IDE to usb adapter with my laptop. Both disks appear to be undamaged.
2. I pulled our TV tuner card & disconnected all nonessential devices.
3. I tried a new video card.
4. On the suggestion of a friend in IT, I removed on of the memory cards & tried booting with one card. (I have a 2gb & 1gb) Tried in both slots & then tried with the other card.
At this point, I still get the same results:
booting to harddrives = constant boot cycle
booting to win 7 disk = attempted load ends in black screen.

My specs: Acer Aspire M5360, Intel Core 2 Dual, I think it is around 1.8ghz, 3Gig of ram, ATI media media card 128mb, Original OS-Vista, upgraded to Win 7 Home 32bit. 500gb primary hd; 1TB media drive

I've been running Microsoft Security Essentials. My son often goes to kids game sites & I wondered if he picked up some malware.

Any suggestions?
